Q. Does an baby need to wear a bodysuit and a sleepsuit?
A.Well the first thing to know is that a simple rule is that a baby should wear one more layer than we would in the same situation. This is because baby skin is thin and babies cannot regulate their own body temperature until they are about 12 months old. Having said that it is going to depend on the weight of the baby clothes ( summer fabric is lighter than heavier winter fabric ) and the composition of the material. Natural fibres like merino wool, cotton and bamboo are breathable and therefore better for baby than manmade fabrics. Feel the back of the baby's neck or their chest to feel how warm or cool they are.
We have baby hats too, these are all practical, easy to wash and sweet. Very important for a stylish baby when out and about.
Q. Why should a baby wear a baby hat when outside in cooler weather?
Well firstly a baby’s head is about 20% of their total body area so is a major spot for heat loss so a winter hat when outdoors is an essential. In fact they can lose half their body heat through their head and as they have very little body fat, too much heat loss is potentially dangerous. So a baby hat that covers and protects their ears is an important factor when choosing. Protecting baby ears from biting winds is important. A baby who is the correct temperature for the situation is a happier baby.
NEVER leave a baby hat on indoors or once in the car as babies are unable to regulate their own temperature until they are at least 12 months old. To tell if the baby it the correct temperature feel the back of their neck or their chest - hands and feet are not a good measurement. NEVER leave baby asleep with a baby hat on, again this can lead to overheating which is very dangerous. An uncovered head is the main way a baby gets rid of excess heat due to that large surface area ratio we mentioned before.
